Searching this Site

By Mike Morris, 13/11/02

My apologies - when the web site address was changed I omitted to amend the FreeFind search details. This has now been fixed and the "search this site" facility located on the 'About BAC' and 'Links' Pages should now work again!

Thanks to these people for volunteering, and congratulations on being selected.

Hot Air and Mini-Olympics!

By Allan Preston, 25/8/02

Mike Linaker and myself with 7 girls from St Hilda's High School ran the Balloon Festival MINI-OLYMPICS at Towneley Park over the weekend.

Without those 7 girls, the event would have been a complete non starter, so many thanks to those concerned!

Yet More Congratulations!

By Allan Preston, 23/8/02

The Burnley A C Vets Mens Over 50 Team WON the Northern Vets Over 50 League with an outstanding performance throughout the season, beating teams from all over the Northern region. Well Done the TWO members of that team!

Not to be shy they are: Mr Johnathon Edwards and his close compatriot Mr Michael Linaker, who for medical reasons has had to call an early close to his career as a Vet athlete. Well Done the lads.. and commiserations to Mike on his unfortunate turn of events.

The other news came as a surprise to most of us, especially myself, whilst attending the Mid-Lancs X-Country Fixture Meeting at Lancaster on Wednesday night, 21st Aug - I was informed that the Burnley A C Womens Mid-Lancs Team had WON the Division 2 title and therefore will be promoted to Division 1 for next year!

Well done to all the ladies who have been members of that team over the season, but I think that the two main members and the backbone of the team have been Mrs Julie Wall and Mrs Karen Vaughan. Jolly well done.

Burnley Athletic Club's New Internet Domain!

By Mike Morris, 11/8/02

To celebrate acquiring our very own domain name - details to appear here shortly - I've redesigned the Burnley Athletic Club website. Hope you like the new look and feel of the site but as always constructive, helpful suggestions are welcome!

You can find my email address towards the bottom of the 'About BAC' page if you'd like to get in touch.

WANTED!

By Mike Linaker, 11/8/02

It is intended to enlist one person from each age group (U13b / U13g / U15b / U15g / U17b / U17g) to act as team leaders. They will be responsible to the team manager who in turn will be responsible to the committee.

Their duties will be:

1. To be responsible for their team mates within their age group.

2. To welcome new members within their age group, introduce them to all the coaches etc. and help them overcome any problems within their first weeks.

3. To assist the team managers leading up to and during meetings.

4. To maintain contact with their team mates and keep them informed of transport arrangements, meeting dates and times etc.

5. To assist in the gathering of results for their age group and handing the results to their managers.

6. To hold regular meetings with their team mates about club activities, problems etc. or anything that may need to be brought up at general committee meetings (their spokesperson can be either their team manager or the U17 team leader, who may be invited to a committee meeting to discuss the matters in hand).

Team Leaders will be voted in annually by their team mates and the 6 voted leaders will be listed on the notice board for all to see.

This experimental exercise will start at the end of the track season and will cover the young athletes league and mid lancs league up to senior level, but we will need to be ready before then, team leaders will have to be voted in by their team mates and meetings will take place on a regular basis between leaders and the managers to discuss how best to run things.

Anyone interested in being a team leader and getting more involved with the running of your club for the 2003 season please contact a team manager or committee member as soon as possible - by Thursday 22nd August at the latest!

Remember it cannot work without your full commitment so think hard before entering your names.

Your team managers up to senior level for 2003 are:

Joanne Browne and Mike Linaker

In The Pipeline ...

By Allan Preston, 3/8/02

Two forthcoming happenings:

Firstly, Burnley AC are in discussion with the Twin Town Association of Burnley with regard to an Athletics event being staged between ourselves and Burnley's twin town Vitry-sur-Seine (see news item Twinnage Proposal dated 31/5/02). This first event will probably be staged here in Burnley. More news to follow as and when it arrives.

Secondly, the Club has also been asked if we would like to put a bit of a "Mini-Olympics" event together for the Hot Air Balloon Festival to be held over the bank holiday week-end in August - more info on that soon, too.

By Allan Preston, 1/8/02

Chris Hart was selected for the English Schools squad and although we haven't had official confirmation as yet we understand he performed well at a recent meeting in Scotland. Once again, Well Done from all at the Club, Chris!

Ongoing Web Site Problems

27/7/02

The problems caused by Tiscali following their takeover of our old host ISP UKgateway continue (we are by no means the only ones who've been adversely affected). In the light of Tiscali's seeming inability to put right their own mistakes, we are actively seeking ways to resolve the situation.

Meanwhile, well done for finding your way here! We will keep you posted regarding developments.

British Golden Jubilee 10K Open Road Race, 21st July 2002

28/6/02

We've been asked to add an athletics link for a very good cause:

The British Golden Jubilee 10K Open Road Race, London

One of the organisers emailed us: "The event on July 21st is expected to have 20,000 runners with a big team (including from all boroughs of the New York Fire Dept) raising funds for the victims of the New York terrorism attacks of 2001, and the event may be started by the Mayors of London & New York, any Event profits being divided among the charities after."

Other charities will also benefit and it appears that they are attracting a good many runners, who are being sponsored by a good many charities.

Club Newsletter Editor

By Mike Linaker, 9/6/02

A busy work schedule has meant that Julie Wall has had to resign as editor of the Club Newsletter. The committee would like to take this opportunity to express their thanks to Julie for all she has done in putting the Newsletter together, not always an easy task by any means!

Change of Venue, Northern Mens League, 8th June

By Allan Preston, 31/5/02

The Northern Mens League event scheduled for Saturday, 8th June has now been switched to Barden Track, Burnley (see Club Events page).

Twinnage Proposal

By Allan Preston, 31/5/02

The club has been contacted by Burnley Twin Town Association, who want more associations in the town to become involved with them.

As most people know, Burnley's twin town in France is Vitry-sur-Seine, which used to be a small town outside Paris and is now a Parisienne Urban district.

Further information to be posted on the website after the committee meeting on Wednesday.

Burnley AC Members Shine at Hexam
& Commonwealth Youth Games

By Allan Preston, 28/5/02

Colin Bailey, U20, came 2nd in the North of England U20 combined events competition at Hexham, attaining a PB in points accumulated. The winner was a Guest U20's England team man. Colin beat him in three events, Pole vault, Javelin and High Jump but unfortunately the young man was so strong in his other events that his points total was greater than Colin's.

A Well Done to Colin.

Danielle Walker U13's Girl LAA Champion in 1500m, Alexis Walker, U15's LAA Javelin Champion. Alexis, carrying a knee injury, was out to try to break the championship record but due to the injury did not manage to do so.

Both Danielle and Alexis were invited to attend the Commonwealth Youth Games at Manchester's New Commonwealth Games Stadium, where Danielle attained a third place in the 1500m and Alexis attained 2nd place with a PB of 30.06m

Also at the Games were Colin Bailey and Daniel Whittaker. I await to hear from them both as to how they got on but as you can see FOUR Burnley athletes making it to those games is something that I personally think the club can be proud of.

Well Done all concerned!

Stuart Completes London Marathon

By Mike Morris, 28/4/02

Just had this in today (via a circuitous route :-) from Stuart Henderson, a road runner affiliated to Burnley Athletic Club -

"Just a line to thank everyone who sponsored me for Cancer Research UK to run the London Marathon. I hopefully have raised around £400.

"It took me 3 hrs 47 mins to complete the run and now I feel like I have stood on a rake. The high point of the day was the superb atmosphere and the low point was being overtaken by a Zulu and a Mobile Phone.

"If anyone who sponsored me could let me have the money very soon I would be grateful so I can send the cheque off. Many Thanks."

Well done, Stuart and congratulations from us all!

North of England Cross Country Champion

By Allan Preston, 26/1/02

Danielle Walker is the U13s Female Cross Country Champion of the NORTH OF ENGLAND.
She won today at Derby by more than 30 metres to second place.

Well done yet again, Danielle!

Champ Confirmed!

By Allan Preston, 16/1/02

We now have confirmation that Danielle Walker IS the Mid-lancs champion again.

She also made Athlete Of The Year at the Club's presentation night last Friday (11/1/02)

Sportsperson is Chris Hart

Well done all!

There are far too many trophies to list here so if anyone wants to see who got what, there will be a poster up in the club upon my return on Tuesday, 22nd January

For anyone who won an award in the star awards scheme, there are badges for sale in the Gold, Silver and Bronze categories, the price is £ 1-50 each.

As we decided not to instigate the Shine Awards scheme, we are returning to the Esso scoring tables etc to use as Burnley A C Five Star Awards scheme. The scheme will fully implemented in time for next year. The shine awards proved to be far to expensive to inaugurate.

Burnley A.C. 2001 Record Trivia

By Mike Linaker, 10/1/02

The following information has been gathered from results given to me over the past two months. There maybe more results I have not received, but from the information that I have received here are some facts about Burnley A.C. 2001:

TAKING THE LADIES FIRST!

NOW FOR THE MEN!

Now to add all the results together;

I hope you enjoyed this bit of nonsense trivia, but it was hard getting results together at the end of the year, so please make it easier next time by giving all your results at the end of each month or meeting to myself or Mr. Allan Preston. Your shine awards and trophies are all collated from these results!

Thank you

Mike Linaker

More Successes!

Also Marc Hartley made 6th in the Under 15's Boys and made it into the County Team
