Substantial Funding Award

By Allan Preston, 13/11/03

I am pleased to report that the Network Funding People have come through for the club with a substantial award.

This funding award is to enable the club to bring into athletics young people from different walks of life through college, schools and other sporting activities.

The pacesetter group will probably be the best targeted group for most of the award as this group is the future of our sport. Our particular group is growing all the time and the time has now come for more coaches to be brought in to keep the growth and forward momentum online.

Therefore with the help of Lancashire Sport and the S D O at Burnley, we envisage bringing in the college people who are doing Recreation and Leisure as their chosen subject, as their outwork project we will offer them a chance to work "Hands On" for their 20 hrs, with a level 2 coach. They will be offered a place on a level 1 coaching course as part of the curriculum.

We would also hope that pupils in year 11, at our partnership schools, would also like to partake in this project, they would be offered a place on a young coaches course in readiness to take their level 1 course when they come of age to do so.

Burnley AC Viewed from Far and Wide

from Mike Morris, 20/7/03

Some of you may have noticed that the web site counter has recently changed (the old counter provider wanted to start charging but, being sensible folk here in Burnley, we're having none of that when you can get counters for free elsewhere ;-).

Anyway, the new counter people (StatCounter) provide lots of statistics; for instance, out of the 69 people who visited the Burnley AC web site in the last week, 7 were from America, 6 from Sweden and 1 from faraway Nepal. Seems that Burnley AC has a global audience!

Burnley AC Forges Partnership with St. Hilda's High School

from Allan Preston, 19/6/03

In order to forge even closer links with the schools of Burnley, the club is to take the first school aboard the Partnership, St Hilda's RC High School for Girls. After ten years ties to the school, the partnership is to be made formal in August, with just a couple of small items to be ironed out to everyone's satisfaction, and we will be in business. The club has already committed to the partnership by supplying an indoor sports kit for St Hilda's; both parties will become better funded and, what is more, the school will be a source of members for the club.

St Hilda's is to be followed by a feeder school, St Mary Magdalene's Junior School, on Wellfield Drive. It is hoped to have this school signed up by the New Year.

After that other schools will be encouraged to come aboard to reap the benefits that lay within the partnership.

Meeting On The Move?

by Allan Preston, 13/5/03

The NYAL meeting at Crewe could be going elsewhere, if a venue can be found to host it.

This is because the NYA parent body have decided that Double headers are just too much to cope with, having as many as 15/16 teams competing at the same venue, especially now that the girls are amalgamated into the same teams/leagues.

Young Athletes Meeting, Oldham

by Allan Preston, 10/5/03

The next Y A L Meeting in Oldham will be a single-header and moves are afoot to get the remainder changed too. Therefore the day won't be as long or as hard on everyone!

Young Athletes Meeting, 4th May

by Allan Preston, 8/5/03

At the Young Athletes Meeting on the 4th May, 137 national grades were attained by athletes across all age ranges.

2 Grade 1's went to 2 U13 Girls, 15 Grade 2's went all age groups as did 35 Grade 3's and 85 Grade 4's.

This is an exceptional thing to happen, especially at the first one in the year.

There were so many, I didn't have sufficient certificates available to print out and send to the relevant clubs, I await a delivery of certificates to do this.

Congratulations to Hyndburn for winning the North 2 N/W match on the day, Burnley came a very good second considering the size if the team.

At this juncture, I really must thank ALL the people that helped out during the day, whatever they did, the teamwork was a joy to see; everyone, and I mean everyone, deserves praise. Many, Many Thanks

A bright note to close with...  I have it on good authority that there will possibly be NO MORE double headed fixtures in the Y A L at our level.

Lancashire Schools and Lancashire Championships

by Allan Preston, 27/4/03

At the Lancashire Schools and Lancashire Championships held at Preston on Sunday, 27th April, Abigail Ewart turned in some first-class performances, coming first in both the Shot Putt and High Jump. Abigail's total points came to 1793, meaning she came an overall 4th - well done Abigail and congratulations from the Club!

Pacesetter Group Grows!

By Allan Preston, 7/4/03

Burnley A C Pacesetter group has really taken of this season, quite early too, from a regular attending no. 6 it has grown to 19 and there are more prospects asking to join every week. From my part, as Secretary, this is good to see, these youngsters are the future of the club, whatever that may be. Burnley Health Links group will be joining the Pacesetters group for a couple of sessions to see if they like it, if they do they will become regulars, shoving the number over the 30 mark, which mans that more coaches will be needed to help out on Monday nights.

Below are 3 pictures of the Parents and Youngsters getting ready for the Pacesetters group with Phil and Julie Wall aided by Peter Simcoe.

Vandals!

By Allan Preston, 7/4/03

Cut net   Vandals have once again damaged the hammer cage net, this is the new one that has not yet seen competition, somehow they have managed to cut a section of the netting out. See picture (left)

One wonders what they get out of wanton damage as this, the net cost almost £2000, and they seem to get great pleasure in seeing how many ways there are to do it damage.

Operation Hawthorn

By Allan Preston, 13/3/03

Today the Mayor of Burnley will visit the Athletic Arena at Barden Complex to see what the Lancashire Fire & Rescue Services "THE PRINCES TRUST" have done under "Operation Hawthorne".

A Couple of months back, I negotiated a deal with the Parks Dept, if they supplied some sharp thorned bushes, I would see that they were planted by the required deadline (end March 2003).

2500 were ordered and delivered to the Queens Park greenhouse and Garden centre.

Initially I had worked out a project with the "Community Services" people, because we fit their criteria in every way were taken on and accordingly given a team of workers but being committed elsewhere just prior to the bushes being delivered, I was approached by the Parks Dept and asked if we minded The Princes Trust people getting involved, of course seeing no movement on the bushes I said of course they could become involved, the team leader came to see me on the friday had a look around the site and agreed to come onboard the project. They started work on the morning of the 3rd March and they completed the project today, Thursday the 13th March, with a visit from his worship, The Mayor of Burnley.

The club will present a certificate of appreciation to the Princes Trust team via the Mayor and we now have a completely High Thorn Hawthorne Bush Hedgerow all the way around the perimeter of the track area, within a couple of months we should see some growth in the bushes and the they will become noticeable.

E S Cross Country Finals

By Allan Preston, 9/3/03

Danielle Walker finished 16th overall in her age group at the E S X/Country finals in Sussex yesterday, other members of the club accreddited themselves with good runs over all the age groups, a good dyas racing was had by all.

Emily Pidgeon won the age group easily, beating Danielle by several seconds (36), Dani ran well despite still recovering from a severe cold 2 weeks ago, but as this is her first year in this age group things bode well for the future.

BURNLEY A.C. TRIVIA 2002

By Mike Linaker, 15/1/03

This year has been one of the best I have known for achievements at Burnley AC.

We have had County Champions, a selection for the ENGLAND squad, Lancashire Schools Champions, English Schools Champions, Catholic Schools International runner up in Malta, Inter County Senior Men's Champions, and 5 athletes selected to attend the new Commonwealth Games Stadium in Manchester prior to the Games themselves.

Well done to you all!

NOW the Ladies.

There were 21 female records broken or NEWLY SET

There were 321 event results given in by the ladies, which equal well over 802 throws, jumps and runs.

68 records bettered before the final record was set.

Alexis Walker bettered her Javelin throw 12 times before setting final record

Abigail Ewart bettered the discus 10 times before setting final record.

Julie Wall & Karen Vaughan set new records 37 times in various events during the season.

Julie Wall, Abigail Ewart, Alexis Walker and Danielle Walker shared the most records achieved.

Not to forget Joanne Browne who, just for fun did the triple jump, not only did she JUST reach the sand pit, but also created a new club record whilst doing so.

The most events covered was 68 by Karen Vaughan, followed by Abigail Ewart with 56.

Only using the calculations of their best result on the day, from each meeting, so theoretically these figures can be at least tripled.

Together THE LADIES ran 30.79 miles in 2.84 hours.

They jumped a height of 41.25 metres (that's two houses high).

Threw a distance of 3.82 miles.

And Jumped a distance of 211.34 metres.

To put it into simple terms it is like throwing the Discus, shot and javelin whilst jumping over ditches and hedges on a run from Burnley to Blackpool.

NOW for the MEN

549 results were handed to me from the men, from these I have come up with the following:

39 records have been broken or new ones created.

2 athletes, Colin Bailey and Daniel Whitaker equalled 8 old records.

50 records were achieved during the season, before any final record was set at year-end.

Daniel Whitaker beat various old records 20 times.

The athlete with the most records recorded on the charts is Colin Bailey with 7 followed by Phil Wall with 6.

Again only using the calculations of their best result on the day, from each meeting,

The most events covered was by John Edwards for the second year running, followed by myself with 47, Daniel Whitaker with 44 and Phil Wall and Daniel Eckersley with 40.

The MEN have covered 80.73 miles in 6.95 hours.

Jumped a height of over a tenth of a mile.

Thrown things for over 2 miles.

And jumped a distance of nearly 1 mile.

To put this lot into layman's terms it means the men have left the ladies stranded in Blackpool and we have found our way home.   :-)

AND FINALLY

At the Northern Men's meeting at Macclesfield, 3 vets and an U20 totalling 163 years of age ran the 4x100 relay in a time of 55.2 sec.
WHAT KEPT YOU COLIN ???????????

Latest Team News

By Mike Linaker, 15/1/03

Changes of Team Leaders/Roles:

Danielle Walker has recently taken over from Amy Graham and at the same time Amy Linaker has replaced Jessica Graham.

Some of the team leaders jobs are to include designing a new track suit for the club, reinstating the quarterly newsletter, and to set up a new Birthday card competition.
Their meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at 6.00pm in the clubhouse. If any member wishes to bring something up for discussion, they should tell their appropriate team leader.

UKA: decisions, decisions...

By Allan Preston, 15/1/03

The U.K.A. in the wake of the Emily Pidgeon court case have now decreed that U15 girls can run at the higher distance of 3000mtrs. As always there has to be a price to pay for this sort of thing and that is, > U13 Boys and Girls cannot run distances greater that 1500mtrs (I can see that going to Court as well, but we will see).

The Emily Pidgeon case (if you haven't read about it) was brought by her father against the UKA, for his daughter persistently being refused entry into 3000mtr races, by entry officials, track referees and other bodies. The result was, he won the case, the UKA, hurriedly went into a huddle and came out with the decision you have above.

More just in... I have just been informed that the UKA have reversed another decision made last year. It was brought into being by an amendment to the rules of the Northern Mens League, that in 2001 U17 first year boys would no longer be able to compete against senior men in the league, and that in 2002 after the close of the season U17 B (ex 1st year) would no longer be able to compete against senior men in the league. Several of us tried to fight it, but to no avail.

Well, it seems they have realised what they had done, namely stopped the boys that had competed for two years from competing in the league after they had got into the 2nd year, I know its complicated but the upshot of it all is that a memo has been sent out saying that... "Second year U17B may compete in the league in the year 2003", but they have amended the ruling for 2004, excluding boys at this age from competing against senior men...

So Mrs Ingham will have a decent sized team again this year for the league, let's hope we can hold onto the division we are now in.
