Burnley AC's Open Jumps Night

From Allan Preston, 1/9/04

The evening event, the last of the current season, was not overly attended but some 50+ competitors attended on the night, ranging from the under 13 yr old age group through to the veterans' 55 group.

A cross section of athletes competed on a nice sunny evening in the Long/High/Triple Jumps and the Pole Vault. Some pre-paid entries were not present but on the whole everyone had an easy and friendly meeting. Several Personal Bests were attained; Daniel Linaker in the High Jump, he cleared the 1m 60cm mark for the first time, also John Edwards, 7m 22 in the Triple Jump, beating his friend, Keith Tugwell, 7m 02cm, from Leeds Skyrac club into second place, which is not a frequent happening. Athletes from across the North came to compete and did well in some of their not so regular events.

The meeting closed with a cooling breeze having come from the north east. It is hoped to hold the four evening meetings again next year on concurrent evenings.

Retirement as Club Secretary

By Allan Preston, 30/7/04

I am to retire as secretary as from the 31st August 2004, mainly due to poor health; I will not be leaving the club but taking a far less active role.

I would like if I may to say to all those people and the youngsters, who over the years that have made Athletics a major part of my life, I could go on about the number of young people that have gone through the club whilst I have been associated with it and the number that have come and gone but as with any sport involving young people, they try it and if they dont like it they leave. Without Athletics over the past 20 odd years I dont think I would have been as active now as I am, they have given me much pleasure (and heartache too) and I wish the club all the very very best for the future. That means that the post of secretary will be vacant from that date, at the moment no one has come forward to even ask about the job.

New Subscription Structure

By Mike Linaker, 3/1/04

At the AGM of December 2003 it was decided to change our financial year from January/December to April/May to enable us to run alongside the North of England Athletic Association (NoEAA), to whom we pay our levy.

To enable us to do this we are splitting our membership fees (for this year only). The first payment will be for January to April, with no levy fee (if applicable), then your full years payment due again on or before the 1st May, including the NoEAA levy, which has been increased from £1.00 to £2.00 per year as from May 2004.

You have therefore OVERPAID for the first part of the year and you should be recieving a receipt for payment made and the amount due on May 1st for the full years membership.

I hope you understand the need for doing this, if you have any queries please do not hesitate to see me down the track or ring me at home on [old phone number removed - see new one on Contact Us page].

Yours truly,

M.J.Linaker

Membership Secretary
