and RISC OS Links
This site has been designed entirely on a RISC OS computer and so most of the software mentioned below will only work on RISC OS machines, although where there are Windows or Mac equivalents this is indicated.

RISC OS, by the way, began life on Acorn computers - you may have heard of the BBC B or the Acorn Archimedes? Acorn is no more but happily RISC OS lives on! Some of the latest developments can be found by clicking here. |
During my first faltering efforts at web site authoring, all my HTML was typed by hand - pretty laborious but it gave me a good grounding in the basics, which has proved very valuable since!
Then I started using a word processor called EasiWriter Pro which allowed me to save out files in excellently accurate, efficient HTML format (unlike certain Windows software I could mention!).
EasiWriter is rated as the bees-knees in Word Processing and is currently being ported from RISC OS to the Apple Mac range and, no doubt, eventually to Windows. As were, for instance, Coral Xara, Sibelius and, erm, certain Eidos products (yes, that Eidos!)

Keeping (in effect) two sites updated was a bit time-consuming, though, and could lead to simple mistakes, i.e. updating one bit and forgetting the other! Then I came upon WebChange, which allows you to automate a lot of the processes, such as updating sections of web pages, dates, etc, in much the same way as 'Server Side Includes' except off-line.
There is a Windows version of WebChange but the programme's author admits it isn't quite as good as the RISC OS version :-) Probably well worth a look though, especially if your ISP doesn't allow SSI's. |

Peter Hartley's Intergif is used to convert various graphic formats into GIF's, either still or animated, and Andy Ward's ImageSize checks the dimensions (no URL for ImageSize ATM but it's free -
if you want a copy). |
The popular Intergif is now available in Windows and Mac versions.
To check over the site, I've found John Alldred's !LinkCheck and !Validator to be truly invaluable! There are also some excellent, comprehensive & easy to follow HTML tutorials: click here for John Alldred's Web Site.
The tutorials are NOT just for RISC OS computers, BTW!
| Other web-authoring software I use a lot (particularly on my family web site) includes PicIndex, a programme for generating web pages and thumbnail-image index pages and used for the many hundreds of old snapshots now on my family website. An extremely powerful, configurable app, PicIndex has speeded up the whole process amazingly and the HTML output complies with W3C HTML 4.1 standards. |

Finally, GedcomWeb handles the family tree part of my family website admirably, generating on-line the whole tree or specific portions of it on demand. Again, RISC OS only although I have seen Windows equivalents somewhere ...
(when I eventually remember where I'll post an appropriate URL here). |
Oh - nearly forgot - apart from EasiWriter Pro, most of the sotfware I use was either free or cost a fiver or so :-)))
If you have any comments or suggestions regarding this web site, please Mike Morris

| This website was designed using a StrongArm RISC PC running RISC OS 4 - probably the finest desktop computer in the world! |
|
Thanks to Max Palmer for the RISC OS4 Logo above - I've shrunk it down so much it's lost something in the translation, I'm afraid! The original's quite amazing!
I have to use Windows at work but I prefer to use RISC OS computers at home. To see why I like RISC OS computers, and why I'm not keen on "Windoze" computers, take a look at Richard Torrens' in-depth analysis of why he prefers to run his business (amongst other things he made the house-robots for the Robot Wars TV programme) on Acorn/RISC OS computers .
For more information on Acorn and other RISC OS computers try the new www.riscos.org website - LOTS and LOTS of RISC OS links, software, etc
or try: Acorn Cyber Village
New - Drobe Launchpad - run by a couple of students keen on RISC OS Computers - very geared up to the RISC OS/Acorn scene, very up-to-the-minute, lots of all sorts of news.
Many Thanks for enabling my first, faltering steps in building a web site to John Alldred for his excellent, easy to follow HTML tutorials: click here for John Alldred's Web Site. The tutorials are NOT just for RISC OS computers BTW but again, lots of good Acorn RISC OS software too!
Thanks also to Richard Goodwin of Argonet for the use of his smilies on a previous version of this site -
cheers, Rich!
Richard's site is yet another excellent one to visit: House of Mabel - some cool stuff!
