2001 saw many ups and downs for the club, however the ups far outweighed the downs. Our younger athletes along with the senior men and vets all did the club proud, whether it was on track, field or cross-country.
We had many successes in both the Mid-Lancs, Northern Mens (the team gaining promotion) and the Vets (mens team 2nd place) competitions during the summer months, completing an excellent year for trophies and medals with superb efforts from all our cross-country athletes in both the Mid-Lancs and Red Rose leagues.
I was privileged to attend both the Club's own presentation evening and also the Red Rose Cross-Country presentation evening where the Under 13 girls team were overall winners, with Danni Walker taking a fistful of prizes. The Under 15 boys team also came out top of the pile with 3 of the runners receiving individual accolades too. However this by no means left out the Under 13 Boys nor the Under 15 girls or our Under 17 boys as we had a number of individual awards for our athletes in these age groups too.
Congratulations to all the athletes who took part in all the events over the last 12 months.
At the end of 2001 the Club's AGM was held. Sadly Keith Kershaw retired as the Club's Chairman but will remain involved with the Club as a throws coach and competition official. The committee presented Keith with gifts from the Club and thanked him for his long service to the Club and committee. The post of Chairman was duly appointed to Mick Linaker. The committee and our athletes would like to wish Mick every success in his new role.
So what does 2002 hold?
Young athletes:
Young Athletes Competition ( formerly MacDonald's) for both girls and boys. Burnley has been awarded the job of hosting meetings for both the boys and the girls this year and the committee would like to invite parents and friends to come along and support both the athletes and help on the day.
For the dates of these events see your team managers: Sue Ingham - Boys Team Manager and Joanne Browne - Girls Team Manager.
Again it is hoped that Burnley can build on its successes of last season this year and all the dates for the coming events are published in the Club House or ask your Team Managers when you are down at the track.
It is important that BAC athletes remember to check the Club's notice boards for information regarding all forthcoming events as it is your responsibility to find out this information. The Team managers can't phone 'round athletes to remind them as they both have full-time everyday jobs to do too. So PLEASE THINK and CHECK the NOTICE BOARDS.
You can also visit the Club's website on www.burnley.athleticclub.org.uk/ (i.e. this site if you're reading this online :-). There are reports on events and the dates of forthcoming events in both Track and Field - visit the website and tell us what you think.
Northern Mens
Team Manager is Sue Ingham, again events will be posted on either the Clubhouse notice board or the website, so get surfing!
The VETS
Team Manager is John Edwards - John has recently taken up this role and it was aggreed that he was the right person for the job as he looks the oldest, or was that because he's a wiz at the Hammer, shot, discus, high jump, long jump, triple jump and running!
Last season our Vet men did us proud, coming second with only 2 or 3 at most meetings. Let's hope this year they can run, throw and jump to the top of the pile with new additions such as Phil Wall, who joined the ranks of veteran athletes on the 22nd of February when he reached the ripe old age of 40! Happy Birthday to John!
Julie Wall
